Just before Tony's men shoot the Hornet and Kato, they are attacked by a shadowy figure. The man then gives the Hornet an address to check out, a jewelry store called Kurtzburg's Antiques. As they arrive, a group of armed Germans are making their way out of the store's backway, shooting at everything. The Hornet and Kato give chase and defeat the Germans, one of whom commits suicide. Before they can question their other captives, the antique shop blows up. The Hornet and Kato change into their civilian identities, and Britt is given a tour of the destroyed building by Major Case. Beneath the building is a scientific lab known as "Project: Gladiator". The project was trying to develop super-humans, but only two were created before the Germans attacked: Alpha One and Lee Powell. As Britt gets the history of the project, Kato recognizes an American General leaving the scene with a briefcase of papers: the false Tony Caltone. Kato follows him, but is attacked when "Tony" -acting as an American General-- convinces some local men on the docks that Kato is a Japanese spy. Kato holds his own against the men but ultimately falls to their larger numbers. Alpha One, dressed in an army uniform, --not liking the odds-- intervenes, and both he and Kato defeat the men. Alpha One --also known as Steve-- then flings a trashcan lid to stop the German spy from escaping. While the attack is unsuccessful, the spy does drop some papers that Kato picks up. Recognizing a map's location on the papers, The Hornet and Kato investigate the site, only to find a heavily guarded American submarine dock surrounded by German commandos.
