Jeff Butler
1958–
Jeff Butler was born on February 26, 1958, in Madison, Wisconsin. He is best known as an illustrator and comic book artist whose career bridged fantasy role-playing games and mainstream comics. For five years, Butler worked in the art department of TSR, Inc., where he contributed illustrations to the Dungeons & Dragons and Marvel Super Heroes role-playing games, as well as to Dragonlance novels. This background in fantasy and adventure storytelling shaped his clean, dynamic style.
Butler’s comic book work spans 1983 to 2002, with credits on around 40 issues. His most frequent titles include The Green Hornet, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, The Badger, Sting of the Green Hornet, Jason vs. Leatherface, and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. He often served as artist and inker, and occasionally as writer. While specific co-creations are not widely noted, his collaborations on licensed properties—particularly the Green Hornet and Hercules series—demonstrate his versatility in adapting established characters.
Butler’s later career saw him step back from regular comics work. He remains a respected figure among fans of 1980s and 1990s licensed comics and role-playing game art. No major awards are recorded in available sources, but his contributions to TSR’s visual identity and his steady output across multiple genres have earned him a modest but enduring place in the field.
