DC tapped the Harley Quinn writing duo of Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti to launch the title, capitalizing on the New York Times best-selling momentum of their Harley Quinn collaboration. Palmiotti later confirmed in interviews that from the moment they were offered the book, they committed to a self-contained 12-issue run—no more, no less—and plotted the full year in advance. Emanuela Lupacchino served as interior artist for the early arc, with cover art by Conner throughout; the series ran from June 2015 through mid-2016, ending on the creative team's own terms just as DC Rebirth reshaped the line. A DC Sneak Peek preview story (inserted into Convergence: Green Arrow #2) served as an advance sampler, and the first issue received a second printing, indicating stronger-than-expected retail demand.
