Star Wars: Mace Windu #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeStar Wars: Mace Windu #1 is the opening chapter of the first solo Mace Windu miniseries in Marvel's current Star Wars publishing line set squarely before the character's elevation to the Jedi High Council — territory that had never been explored in canonical comic form at this length or depth. By deliberately placing Windu at a younger, pre-Master stage of his life, writer Marc Bernardin and the creative team expanded the Star Wars prequel-era timeline in a way that recontextualizes one of the saga's most stoic figures, showing him as an active field agent rather than a Council authority. The issue also marks the first canon appearance of Azita Cruuz, a new original character whose smuggler-with-a-secret dynamic gives the series a buddy-action structure entirely absent from prior Windu stories. Produced in explicit celebration of the 25th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, the series represents Marvel and Lucasfilm's most sustained effort yet to build out the pre-Clone Wars era through a character who had previously received only brief solo spotlight treatment.

The series was announced at the Lucasfilm Publishing panel at New York Comic Con in October 2023, alongside companion prequel-era miniseries for Jango Fett and Thrawn — all three positioned as part of Marvel's 2024 initiative honoring the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Menace. Writer Marc Bernardin, whose prior credits include television work on Star Trek: Picard and The Continental as well as Marvel and DC comic work, cited the 1988 film Midnight Run as a key tonal influence on the series' odd-couple, fugitive-escort premise. Artist Georges Jeanty, known for his likeness-driven work on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic continuation, handled pencils throughout; Dexter Vines inked and Andrew Dalhouse provided colors for the issue, with a cover by Mateus Manhanini, who had previously contributed acclaimed Black History Month variant covers for Marvel's Star Wars line. A brief prequel short story featuring Windu appeared in Star Wars: Revelations (2023) #1 prior to the miniseries launch, seeding the character context.
