Star Wars Legends: The New Republic Omnibus #2
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis 2024 Marvel hardcover omnibus is the first collected edition to unite the complete comic adaptations of Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy and the entire Dark Empire Trilogy under one cover — two cornerstone pillars of the Star Wars Expanded Universe that together rebooted the franchise in the early 1990s after nearly a decade of dormancy. The included Heir to the Empire comics (Dark Horse, 1995) mark the comic-page debut of Grand Admiral Thrawn and Mara Jade, two of the most consequential characters ever introduced outside the films; Mara in particular — originally conceived by Zahn as a complex, flawed Force-wielder — went on to become Luke Skywalker's wife in Legends continuity and remains one of the most beloved EU creations. The Dark Empire stories, meanwhile, were among the very first comics Dark Horse produced after acquiring the Star Wars license, and they established the visual and narrative template — including a cloned, resurrected Emperor Palpatine — that influenced Star Wars storytelling for decades, including, critics have noted, elements echoed in later films.

The Dark Empire comics were originally developed by writer Tom Veitch and artist Cam Kennedy in the late 1980s, initially intended for Marvel before editorial changes left the project in limbo; it was ultimately rescued when Dark Horse Comics owner Mike Richardson pursued the Star Wars comics license at the 1990 San Diego Comic-Con, making Dark Empire one of the foundational titles of Dark Horse's long Star Wars tenure. The Thrawn Trilogy comics adaptation, scripted by Mike Baron with art by Olivier Vatine, arrived at Dark Horse in 1995, translating Zahn's bestselling novels to sequential art and introducing Thrawn and Mara Jade to comics readers for the first time. Marvel's 2024 omnibus draws its contents from material previously spread across multiple Epic Collection volumes, consolidating them into a single 1,312-page hardcover with cover art by Dave Dorman — the same painter whose painted covers helped define the look of the original Dark Empire releases.
