About this Collection

This oversized hardcover stands as the definitive single-volume home for the post-Return of the Jedi comic stories that defined the 1990s Expanded Universe on the page. The X-Wing Rogue Squadron series, written by Michael A. Stackpole concurrently with his novels, gave Wedge Antilles and a roster of non-film pilots their own sustained comic mythology, cementing the New Republic era as fertile storytelling ground beyond the film trilogy. The inclusion of 'Mara Jade: By the Emperor's Hand' — the first comics work by Timothy Zahn, the novelist who invented the Legends post-ROTJ continuity — gives readers the definitive comic-form origin of one of the Expanded Universe's most beloved original characters. Together these stories represent a concentrated cross-section of the Legends era at its most ambitious: novel-writers adapting their prose instincts to sequential art, and Dark Horse Comics treating the Star Wars galaxy as a place with corners worth exploring far from the saga's central heroes.

History

All the constituent series were originally published by Dark Horse Comics — which held the Star Wars license from 1991 until Marvel reacquired it in 2015 — and had previously been staged through Marvel's smaller-format Epic Collection paperbacks before being consolidated here. Marvel's Legends Omnibus line, of which this is the opening New Republic installment, presents those same issues in a larger page size with substantially more material per volume than the Epic Collections that preceded them. The omnibus carries two distinct cover variants: a Mathieu Lauffray cover for the standard edition and a Gary Erskine cover for the direct-market variant, both sharing the same interior content.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published January 24, 2023, by Marvel Comics as a hardcover omnibus; ISBN 978-1302946470 (standard edition).
  • Collects Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron #1–35 (1995–1998) and the X-Wing Rogue Squadron Special (1995), the full run of the landmark Dark Horse series written primarily by Michael A. Stackpole — originally planned for just 12 issues but expanded to 35 due to strong readership.
  • Includes Star Wars: Mara Jade – By the Emperor's Hand #0–6 (1998), co-written by Timothy Zahn and Michael A. Stackpole, with art by Carlos Ezquerra — representing Zahn's first foray into writing comics, with Stackpole scripting issues 1–3 and Zahn taking over for issues 4–6.
  • Includes Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire – Evolution #1–5 (1998), written by Steve Perry — also his first comics work — as a direct sequel to his bestselling Shadows of the Empire novel, centering on human-replica droid Guri's post-Endor search for her own humanity.
  • Also collects X-Wing Rogue Leader #1–3 (2005), a three-issue prequel miniseries depicting Luke Skywalker's final mission with Rogue Squadron and his departure to build a new Jedi Order, which narratively bookends the main series.
  • Includes the Star Wars Handbook #1 (1998), an in-universe reference issue spotlighting the Rogue Squadron cast with character, villain, and vehicle entries, written by Peet Janes with contributions from a large team of artists including Arthur Adams and Edvin Biukovic.
  • The X-Wing Rogue Squadron Special (1995) included in this omnibus was originally published exclusively as a mail-in premium through Kellogg's Apple Jacks cereal, making it one of the more unusual distribution stories in Star Wars comics history.
  • The omnibus was released in two cover variants: a standard edition with a cover by Mathieu Lauffray and a direct-market-only edition with a cover by Gary Erskine; back covers on both editions feature art by Duncan Fegredo, John Nadeau, and Kilian Plunkett.
