About this Issue

Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #10 is a turning point in Marvel's ongoing effort to fill the narrative gap between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, delivering the first canonical comic-book depiction of Kylo Ren entering the Netherworld of the Force — a Force realm his grandfather Darth Vader could never access. That distinction carries genuine lore weight: where Vader spent decades trying and failing to commune with the dead, Kylo achieves it precisely because the light of Ben Solo still flickers within him, a detail reviewers and the wider fan community immediately recognized as retroactive enrichment of the sequel trilogy's redemption arc. The issue's post-publication resonance was amplified by the then-simultaneous revelation of the cancelled 'Hunt for Ben Solo' film project, making its exploration of Kylo's inner conflict feel unexpectedly timely and urgent. Multiple outlets noted that the Kylo-Luke encounter across the Force boundary 'broke the internet' within the Star Wars comics community, giving the series its highest-profile moment to date.

History

The series was announced at New York Comic-Con 2024 by writer Charles Soule, who framed Legacy of Vader as a bookend to his earlier 2019 miniseries The Rise of Kylo Ren — together forming a bracketing portrait of Ben Solo's fall and, implicitly, his path back. Soule brought aboard artist Luke Ross, his collaborator from the 2020 Star Wars: Darth Vader ongoing, with Nolan Woodard on colors and Joe Caramagna on letters; Mark Paniccia edited, and Derrick Chew provided the main cover for issue #10. The series launched February 5, 2025, as part of a coordinated Marvel relaunch of its Star Wars line, and issue #10 shipped November 5, 2025, with a January 2026 cover date — placing it squarely in the stretch where Marvel's Star Wars output was being scaled back, lending the series an added urgency among fans aware of its uncertain future.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Charles Soule, art and inks by Luke Ross, colors by Nolan Woodard, letters by Joe Caramagna, cover by Derrick Chew; edited by Mark Paniccia.
  • Published by Marvel Comics on November 5, 2025 (cover-dated January 2026); 22 story pages, rated T+.
  • The issue presents the first canonical depiction of Kylo Ren entering the Netherworld of the Force — described across multiple reviews as a Force feat Darth Vader himself never accomplished, because only a being retaining some light within them can access this mystical afterlife.
  • Kylo uses Darth Vader's meditation sphere/chamber at Fortress Vader on Mustafar to attempt to rid himself of the lingering Force presence of Luke Skywalker; the attempt instead plunges him into a dark metaphysical underworld filled with skeletal visions of those he has wronged, including spectral likenesses of his parents Han Solo and Leia Organa.
  • Within the Netherworld, Kylo confronts Luke Skywalker's Force ghost in a direct canonical encounter after Luke's sacrifice on Crait — Luke's parting words affirm that 'Kylo Ren means nothing to me, but I'll always be there for Ben,' a line reviewers noted echoes Han Solo's dialogue in The Rise of Skywalker.
  • Vaneé — Darth Vader's surviving servant first introduced in live-action in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) — plays a pivotal manipulative role, steering Kylo toward Vader's meditation chamber and, by issue's end, having Kylo placed in a bacta tank; the issue deepens Vaneé's characterization as a scheming, self-interested caretaker rather than a simple attendant.
  • The series is set in 34 ABY, canonically positioned between Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi and Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, per Wookieepedia's cross-reference with Star Wars: Timelines.
  • Three variant covers shipped alongside the main Derrick Chew cover: a 1:25 retailer incentive by Josemaria Casanovas, a Bengal 'Jedi Knights' connecting variant featuring Porter Engle and Belle Zettifar, and an additional variant by Luke Ross.
