About this Issue

Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #11 is the penultimate chapter of the first ongoing Marvel Comics series to dramatize the canon gap between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker — territory the films left almost entirely blank. The issue delivers the narrative payoff of Vaneé's season-long manipulation: forcibly placing Darth Vader's restored helmet onto Kylo Ren and lowering him into the lava pits of Mustafar, a deliberate ritual reenactment of Anakin Skywalker's fiery rebirth as Vader. Kylo's violent rejection of that identity — escaping the ordeal and killing Vaneé — functions in canon as the moment the 'Kylo Ren must become Vader' arc collapses, offering a concrete in-universe explanation for why Ben Solo's light-side self re-emerges in The Rise of Skywalker. The issue thus does double duty as both a climactic action set piece and a structural bridge that retroactively deepens the sequel trilogy's emotional arc.

History

The series was conceived by Charles Soule — who had previously written the 2017 Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith run and the 2019–2020 miniseries The Rise of Kylo Ren — as a deliberate bookend to his earlier Kylo Ren work, completing what he has publicly described as a 'Kylo Ren Trilogy.' Soule first teased the project at New York Comic Con 2024 and began breaking individual issue stories in early 2025, sharing creative updates on Bluesky as he worked through the arc. The core creative team of penciler/inker Luke Ross, colorist Nolan Woodard, and letterer VC's Joe Caramagna held together across the entire twelve-issue run, with editor Mark Paniccia overseeing the series and Derrick Chew providing the primary cover art throughout. Issue #11 shipped December 3, 2025, with a cover date of February 2026.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Charles Soule, with art by Luke Ross (pencils/inks), colors by Nolan Woodard, letters by VC's Joe Caramagna, and a cover by Derrick Chew.
  • Published by Marvel Comics on December 3, 2025 (cover-dated February 2026); it is the eleventh issue of the twelve-issue ongoing series Star Wars: Legacy of Vader (2025).
  • Set in 34 ABY — canonically between Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi and Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker.
  • Central story event: Vaneé drugs Kylo Ren, locks him inside a restored version of Darth Vader's helmet using a kintsugi-style restoration method, and submerges him in the lava pools beneath Fortress Vader on Mustafar — a forced reenactment of Anakin Skywalker's transformation into Darth Vader.
  • Kylo Ren escapes Vaneé's trap, fights his way through the castle's automated defenses, corners Vaneé, and kills him — Vaneé's final words asserting he only wanted Kylo to reach his potential. This is Vaneé's last canonical appearance in this series.
  • Kylo's forcible rejection of the Vader mantle — declaring he is already 'everything he needs to be' — functions in canon as a key psychological turning point that writers and reviewers connect to his eventual return to Ben Solo's identity in The Rise of Skywalker.
  • Issue ships with a 1:25 incentive variant by Rod Reis and a Bengal 'Jedi Knights' variant featuring Plo Koon and Mace Windu.
  • The series concluded with issue #12 (January 2026), and Soule confirmed the story served as the second installment of an intended 'Kylo Ren Trilogy,' with a follow-up limited series — Star Wars: The Fall of Kylo Ren, with artist Will Sliney — announced for August 2026.
