About this Issue

This issue marks a pivotal editorial shift for Marvel's Star Wars line, moving the ongoing comic continuity out of the post-Empire Strikes Back era and into the post-Return of the Jedi period for the first time, directly bridging the classic trilogy with The Force Awakens. It is the opening chapter of a 12-issue maxi-series — the first sustained comic treatment to put Luke, Leia, Han, and the other classic heroes at the center of the Battle of Jakku, a conflict previously depicted in novels and games but never from their perspective in comics form. The issue also delivers the first comic-canon appearance of Rynn Zenat, a new Rebel B-wing pilot who would go on to become a recurring protagonist across the entire maxi-series and into subsequent Star Wars ongoing titles. By anchoring its villain in Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard — a figure seeded across games and reference books since 2015 but never before given a major comics spotlight — the issue demonstrates a new cross-media approach to Star Wars canon storytelling.

History

The series was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 as part of Lucasfilm's 'Acolyte Publishing Program' panel, and it directly follows the conclusion of Marvel's long-running mainline Star Wars and Darth Vader series, which had occupied the post-Empire Strikes Back era. Writer Alex Segura — previously known for his Star Wars: Poe Dameron — Free Fall work — was tapped to script the entire 12-issue maxi-series, with editor Mark Paniccia overseeing the project. The issue ships with two complete stories: the main 'Last Resort,' illustrated by Leonard Kirk with colors by Rachelle Rosenberg, and the backup 'The Rising,' drawn by Stefano Raffaele and colored by Alex Sinclair, with Phil Noto providing all cover art across the series.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published October 2, 2024, by Marvel Comics; written by Alex Segura with art by Leonard Kirk and Stefano Raffaele, colors by Rachelle Rosenberg and Alex Sinclair, letters by VC's Joe Caramagna, and a cover by Phil Noto.
  • First comic appearance of Rynn Zenat, a Rebel Alliance B-wing pilot who crashes on Endor after surviving an attack by Adelhard's forces in the Anoat sector and goes on to warn Luke and Leia of the threat; she becomes a lead character across the full maxi-series.
  • Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard — originally introduced in the 2015 mobile game Star Wars: Uprising, with his first name 'Ubrik' later established in the reference book Scum & Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious — makes his first significant comics appearance here as the primary antagonist.
  • The issue contains two stories: the main tale 'Last Resort,' set immediately after the Battle of Endor, and the backup 'The Rising,' a solo Adelhard origin story detailing his rise from indentured servant to stormtrooper to Grand Moff, including flashback encounters with Thrawn, Grand Moff Tarkin, and Darth Vader.
  • The backup story's climax depicts Darth Vader personally promoting Adelhard to sector governor after Adelhard ordered a planetary gassing to eliminate dissidents — an act Vader found decisive enough to reward.
  • The issue is the first installment of the four-part Insurgency Rising mini-series, itself the first of three four-issue mini-series (Insurgency Rising, Republic Under Siege, and Last Stand) comprising the 12-issue Battle of Jakku maxi-series.
  • Set in 4 ABY according to Star Wars: Timelines, the story picks up hours after the Battle of Endor, concurrent with Marvel's 2015 Shattered Empire mini-series, and features the Skywalker twins' first substantive on-panel conversation about their newly revealed familial relationship and Leia's visit to Vader's funeral pyre.
  • The issue brings the Acolytes of the Beyond — a dark side cult originating in Chuck Wendig's Aftermath novel trilogy — into a major comics storyline for the first time, linking them to Adelhard through the Anzati mystic Reyna Oskure and Emperor Palpatine's former adviser Yupe Tashu.
