This June 1974 installment of Star Spangled War Stories features the Unknown Soldier in a pulse-pounding predicament captured brilliantly on Joe Kubert's cover: two bandage-wrapped soldiers desperately paddling a rubber raft through water studded with spiked naval mines, while great white sharks circle hungrily beneath them — and the urgent cry "Floating Mines! Jump… or We're Dead!" says everything about the stakes. Kubert's draftsmanship gives the scene a visceral sense of dread, balancing the threat from below with the one closing in on all sides.
