“Going Down?”

The finale of DC's four-issue miniseries arrives with a cover that says it all: young Stanley and his big pink furry monster are bolting in wide-eyed panic — because looming behind them is an enormous winged demoness flanked by a seething horde of hellish creatures, all apparently very unhappy about something Stanley and the monster said. Phil Foglio's pencils (inked here by Dick Giordano) perfectly balance the comedic terror, with Stanley's exasperated "Gosh — was it something we SAID?!" capturing the series' signature blend of childhood innocence and supernatural chaos. A satisfying cap to a genuinely fun miniseries that proves monsters and kids make for great comedy even when all of Hell is closing in.
