Part 1 of a two-part story, this January 1991 issue pits Spider-Man against the Hobgoblin — and the cover by Todd McFarlane makes the threat feel uncomfortably real. Spider-Man is bound in heavy chains, straining against them while a massive, leering Hobgoblin looms behind him, flanked by glowing pumpkin bombs and an eerie green haze. The cover teases a surprise guest-star and even cheekily acknowledges the four CBG Fan Awards McFarlane's run had just swept — then reminds you those trophies won't help Spidey now.
