Spider-Gwen #25
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeSpider-Gwen #25 marks the first appearance of 'Gwenom' — the dramatic transformation of Earth-65's Gwen Stacy after she bonds with her universe's version of the Venom symbiote — a milestone that fundamentally redirected the character's trajectory and gave her one of her most distinctive alternate identities. The issue kickstarted the 'Gwenom' story arc, a morally complex chapter that forced Gwen to confront whether the rage and darkness she felt while bonded to the symbiote were the alien's influence or her own, a psychological question that resonated far beyond a simple villain-of-the-month plot. As a Marvel Legacy tie-in and a numbered milestone issue, it also served as a deliberate on-ramp for newer readers, arriving with bonus Marvel Primer Pages contextualizing Gwen's world. The Gwenom persona eventually carried enough cultural weight to headline its own collected editions and become one of the defining visual and narrative signatures of the character's run.

The Gwenom concept had been building for some time within Jason Latour's run, with the creative team and Marvel editorial teasing the symbiote storyline well before it arrived; pre-publication coverage from Bleeding Cool in July 2017 noted that Latour himself outlined the backstory in a Newsarama interview — Earth-65's Matt Murdock (the Kingpin of Crime) holding the cure to Harry Osborn's Lizard condition, with the Venom symbiote as an unintended byproduct, and Gwen as the unwilling pivot point. The issue launched under the Marvel Legacy banner, which Marvel was using across its line in late 2017 to renumber or re-energize series with milestone issue numbers. At least one reviewer noted a suspicion that the Gwenom arc had been planned for an earlier slot but was displaced by the Legacy initiative's timing requirements, suggesting some editorial reshuffling shaped the issue's final position in the run.
