About this Issue

Spider-Boy #3 is the first appearance of Killionaire, the anchor villain of Bailey Briggs's early rogues' gallery and the figure whose pull on Taskmaster drove the arc launched in issue #2. Alongside Killionaire, the issue delivers the first appearances of both the Toy Soldier — a miniaturized Super-Adaptoid that would go on to become a recurring ally — and Killionaire's henchmen Floyd and Boyd. Structurally the issue is also notable for its backup story, which reveals for the first time that Bailey possesses the ability to communicate with spiders, a power that quietly expands the scope of what Spider-Boy can do beyond his established wall-crawling and super-strength. Taken together, the two stories establish the deliberate creative strategy of the series: building a distinct, youth-oriented corner of the Spider-Man corner of the Marvel Universe stocked with entirely new characters designed from the ground up for Bailey rather than borrowed from Peter Parker's history.

History

Spider-Boy was co-created by writer Dan Slott and artist Humberto Ramos, debuting in Spider-Man vol. 4 #7 (2023) as a surprise addition to the 'End of the Spider-Verse' storyline — a preteen hero erased from everyone's memory whom Slott conceived as an intentionally rule-breaking premise: Spider-Man was never supposed to have a sidekick. Slott has stated publicly that he had the character concept 'for some time' and moved forward once Marvel confirmed he could legally use the Spider-Boy name. The ongoing series, drawn primarily by Paco Medina with Ty Templeton handling backup stories, launched in November 2023 and was edited by Ellie Pyle under executive editor Nick Lowe; the dual-story format seen in issue #3 was a deliberate structural choice to justify the higher cover price and give Templeton a separate, tonally distinct showcase. Slott ultimately wrote all 20 issues of the series before departing Marvel for DC in 2025.
