“Three Uses of the Knife”

Spawn looms from the shadows on this striking 1999 cover, his tattered red cape billowing dramatically while chains trail from his figure and twin bursts of sickly green hellfire crackle in the darkness around him. Greg Capullo's pencils — inked here by Todd McFarlane himself — capture the character at his most brooding and elemental, all jagged edges and supernatural menace. "Three Uses of the Knife" promises the kind of dark, layered storytelling that made this series one of Image's most compelling ongoing titles of the era.
