That retcon fundamentally reshaped Spawn's origin mythology: the question of who really pulled the trigger on Al Simmons had been a core dramatic thread since issue #1, and this issue begins unraveling it by having the Clown plant doubts about Chapel's guilt during Spawn's trance-vision. Decades later, Priest returned in Spawn #300 as She-Spawn and became a lead character in The Scorched, making her introduction here a pivot point whose narrative consequences extended across more than twenty years of the title's run.

Written and co-inked by Todd McFarlane with pencils by Greg Capullo and inks also from Chance Wolf, the story titled 'Sanctuary' was published by Image Comics in May 1997 — the same season the live-action Spawn film was in final production. The issue carries a dedication to Mark Dippé, the film's director, reflecting how tightly the comic and the movie were developed in parallel at that moment. Jessica Priest had debuted on screen first, created because Chapel's rights were held by Rob Liefeld and could not be licensed for the film; McFarlane then folded her into comic continuity beginning here, with Spawn #60 having already revealed that Chapel may not have been Simmons's killer.
