About this Issue

Space Ghost (2025 Series) #1 marks the formal launch of a second volume of Dynamite's critically praised revival, arriving after a 12-issue first run that introduced a generation of readers to the Alex Toth-designed character through a fresh, ongoing serialized lens. Structured as a deliberate jumping-on point, it brings the classic animated villain the Toymaker into Pepose and Lau's continuity for the first time, expanding the roster of Hanna-Barbera antagonists available to the series. The issue also continues a subplot seeded in the previous volume — a figure from the twins Jan and Jace's past — threading long-form character drama through what is simultaneously a self-contained adventure. Sustaining the same creative team across a renumbering rather than recasting the series signals an unusual degree of editorial confidence in a licensed property and keeps narrative momentum intact for both existing and new readers.

"Hostage Drama and Family Drama!" kicks off Dynamite's 2025 Space Ghost series with a high-stakes dual threat: Space Ghost and Blip must navigate a chaotic hostage crisis on the amusement park planet Playtopia Prime, seized by the cruel Toymaker. Meanwhile, the personal stakes rise as Jo and Jace confront Doctor Henry Contra, a mysterious man claiming to be their maternal grandfather and seeking to separate them from their guardian. Written by David Pepose and illustrated by Jonathan Lau, with colors by Andrew Dalhouse and letters by Taylor Esposito, this issue blends action and emotional tension, all framed by Francesco Mattina’s dynamic cover.

History

Dynamite Entertainment announced its Space Ghost series in October 2023 as part of a broader Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products licensing arrangement, with the first volume launching in May 2024 under writer David Pepose and artist Jonathan Lau. The 2025 relaunch was announced in April 2025 and originally targeted July 2025, but was pushed to August 2025 when the Space Ghost Annual — which bridged the two volumes — was itself delayed and landed in July. The decision to renumber rather than simply continue the series is consistent with an industry-wide practice of using fresh number-ones as retailer and reader entry points, and the series' first trade collection (covering the initial arc) had already been released in November 2024 to build the audience ahead of the new volume.

  • Written by David Pepose with interior art by Jonathan Lau, colors by Andrew Dalhouse, and letters by Taylor Esposito — the identical creative team that produced the preceding 12-issue first volume.
  • Serves as the opening chapter of Space Ghost Vol. 2, explicitly designed as a jumping-on point with interwoven recaps for new readers.
  • Features the first appearance of the Toymaker within the Pepose/Lau continuity: Space Ghost and Blip must defuse a hostage crisis on an amusement-park-themed planet seized by the villain.
  • A secondary subplot — a mysterious figure from Jan and Jace's past confronting the Ghost Planet team — carries forward a long-form story thread established in Volume 1.
  • Cover artists for the issue include Francesco Mattina (Cover A), Jae Lee & June Chung (Cover B), Bjorn Barends (Cover C), Michael Cho (Cover D), and Alex Ross (Cover E variant) — Bleeding Cool noted the Alex Ross cover was Dynamite's first Ross cover art in approximately five years.
  • The series was teased in the back pages of Dynamite's ThunderCats #1 before its formal announcement, positioning it as part of a coordinated Hanna-Barbera comics publishing initiative.
  • A companion podcast, Ghost Stories with David Pepose, documented the making of the Dynamite series across both volumes.
