The lead story depicts a spacecraft escaping from an exploding inner planet, with the surviving crew and passengers evacuating to the asteroid Hermes after the planet Hsein-Chul detonates. A second story, "Footprints of Fear," is a text feature about a radio broadcaster organizing an expedition to the Himalayas to investigate reports of a legendary Snowman, encountering mysterious large footprints in the snow. A third story follows an astronaut crew who mysteriously returns to Earth after six months in space, having been spotted by astronomers, only to be whisked away to a military hospital for examination.
Two alien visitors from Neptune land on Earth disguised as humans, hoping to gather observations about earthlings for their university classes. When their attempts to interact with the locals go mysteriously unheeded—despite their perfect English and careful mimicry—Zenter and Xerxu realize something has gone terribly wrong with their disguise. They'll need to rethink their approach before they can complete their anthropological mission.
When a fiery visitor crashes into what will become the Arizona Crater, a caveman named Oolag and his family witness the impact—but they have no idea that alien colonizers have seeded the crater with spores meant to grow their food supply. As a rapidly spreading fungus emerges and begins consuming everything in its path, including the family's vital water source, Oolag must lead his people to safety while a mysterious spaceship monitors the experiment from above. This is the clash between prehistoric survival and interplanetary conquest, told from both sides of an encounter that will reshape the land forever.
When Atlantis's astronomers detect hostile activity on the Moon, they learn that the aggressive Lunarian leader Ongar has built atomic weapons and intends to conquer Earth—starting with their island civilization. As lunar rockets rain down destruction, the scientists of Atlantis reverse-engineer a captured enemy weapon and prepare a devastating counterattack. Both worlds face annihilation in this tale of interplanetary conflict set in Earth's ancient past.
Three young professors venture to Saturn as humanity's first deep-space explorers, only to return six months later with startling discoveries about the planet's inhabitants—a utopian civilization with powers far beyond Earth's understanding. When government officials demand they reveal the Saturnians' secrets as potential weapons, the scientists face an impossible choice between loyalty to their world and the knowledge that conquest would lead only to disaster. What unfolds is a tense confrontation between human ambition and an encounter with a fundamentally different way of being.
