Soeperman #1
The Dutch humor comics scene got a colorful new champion in 2011 with Soeperman #1 — "Redt het wel alleen" — featuring the gap-toothed, cape-wearing Soeperman strutting confidently in his blue-and-red super-suit emblazoned with a bold "S," while a woman lugging a suitcase walks behind him and a bewildered hedgehog looks on from the sidelines. Two cartoon birds swoop chaotically overhead, completing a cover scene that perfectly captures the cheerful absurdity writer Willem Ritstier and artist René Uilenbroek bring to their superhero parody. If you enjoy comedy that winks at superhero conventions without taking itself too seriously, this first volume is a fine place to start.
