Collecting issues #5-8 of the 2012 Boom! Studios series, 'Ships and Sealing Wax' adapts more characters and nonsense from Lewis Carroll's poems and stories into a comedic, swashbuckling narrative.
In "Diary," the crew of the Bellman's ship finds themselves stranded on a strange island, barely escaping a flock of ravenous birds—only to be rescued by their unlikely saviors. With the mysterious map to Snark Island finally revealing its secrets after being soaked, the search takes a thrilling turn as the Bellman shares a long-lost message from Scarlett and Rusty's father. Written and illustrated by Roger Langridge, with colors by Lisa Moore and lettering by Langridge himself, this issue brings the surreal adventure to life, all capped by a cover by Langridge that captures the story’s whimsical dread.
In "Diary" from Snarked #2, two pages from Princess Scarlett’s diary capture the quiet, eerie moment of her first encounter with the Walrus and the Carpenter—her thoughts sketched in ink, the air thick with unspoken tension. The story unfolds in the intimate space between pages, where a single visit sets the stage for something far stranger than it appears.
In "Fit the Fifth: How Doth the Little Crocodile...?", the Bellman's crew faces starvation as they recount their failed hunt for the elusive Snark—during which the Baker vanished. When the giant crocodile Big Norman storms the ship, Walrus makes a bold move that solves their hunger, leaving behind more than just a meal.
In "Fit the Sixth: Yo Ho Ho and a Nice Cup of Tea," the Mad Hatter’s pirate crew storms the Bellman’s ship, capturing the crew in a chaotic clash. When Walrus fakes a plague to escape, the pirates release them—only for the Bellman’s crew to abandon Walrus, McDunk, Scarlett, and Rusty at sea in a lifeboat, stranded with no supplies.
In "Fit the Seventh: Beautiful Soup" from Snarked #2, Jo and her companions find themselves stranded on a perilous island, barely escaping a flock of ravenous birds before the Bellman and his crew come to their rescue. With the mysterious map to Snark Island finally revealing its secrets—when wet, it shows the way—hope flares as the crew prepares to sail toward a destination long thought lost.
In "Fit the Eighth: The Frumious Bandersnatch," the Gryphon's relentless pursuit of the Bellman's boat reaches a dramatic climax when he summons the legendary Bandersnatch with a magic flute—only to find the beast is far more interested in a toothache than conquest. With McDunk's help and the Walrus's quick thinking, the monstrous creature is unexpectedly turned into an unlikely ally, sending the Gryphon tumbling into the sky.
