About this Issue

SilverHawks #1 (January 2025) marks the first original comic-book series devoted to the Rankin/Bass property since the original Marvel Star Comics run of 1987–1988 — a gap of nearly four decades — bringing the galaxy-policing cyborg team back to the medium that once supported the animated series. It arrives as a deliberate companion piece to Dynamite's already-successful ThunderCats relaunch, with both titles operating under a shared editorial umbrella that Dynamite publicly described as a 'family of titles,' making this issue the founding chapter of what would eventually grow into the first-ever ThunderCats/SilverHawks crossover event in comics history. The issue also serves as the in-comics introduction of Hotwing to the main team roster from the outset — a character who appeared only later in the original cartoon's run — signaling that the creative team intended to expand on and reorder the source material rather than strictly adapt it.

History

The series was announced at New York Comic Con 2024, approximately one year after Dynamite unveiled its ThunderCats relaunch, and was developed under a licensing agreement between Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, the current rights holder to SilverHawks following Warner Bros.' 1989 acquisition of Lorimar-Telepictures. Writer Ed Brisson, who had already worked within Dynamite's Warner Bros. Discovery stable on the ThunderCats: Apex special, actively lobbied for the assignment; he has publicly stated that he pestered ThunderCats writer Declan Shalvey about the possibility of a SilverHawks book from the moment Dynamite's ThunderCats launched. Artist George Kambadais was recruited to the project on the strength of his prior work on Dynamite's Gargoyles series, and the two were positioned by the publisher as an original-material creative team rather than an adaptation unit — their stated goal being to expand on backstories and corners of the SilverHawks universe that the cartoon had only hinted at.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First issue of the first SilverHawks ongoing comic series since the original Marvel Star Comics run (1987–1988), a gap of roughly 37 years.
  • Published by Dynamite Entertainment on January 29, 2025; written by Ed Brisson, art by George Kambadais, primary cover (Cover A) by Lucio Parrillo.
  • Part of Dynamite's Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products licensing slate, the same deal that produced their ThunderCats, Space Ghost, PowerPuff Girls, and Jonny Quest titles.
  • The series roster in issue #1 includes Quicksilver, Bluegrass, Hotwing, Steelwill, Steelheart, and The Copper Kidd under Commander Stargazer — notably featuring Hotwing as a founding member, whereas in the original animated series he appeared later in the run.
  • Issue #1 shipped with a substantial variant-cover program featuring art by Jae Lee & June Chung, James Stokoe, Declan Shalvey, Geraldo Borges, Manix, Ivan Tao, and David Cousens, among others; Key Collector Comics lists 62 registered variants for the issue.
  • The main series ran 10 issues before concluding, after which it fed directly into the ThunderCats X SilverHawks crossover event — a 15-issue, three-miniseries event launching March–April 2026, co-written by Brisson and Declan Shalvey.
  • The original animated property debuted in 1986 from Rankin/Bass Productions (distributed by Lorimar-Telepictures) and was explicitly conceived as a space-set companion to ThunderCats, sharing much of the same production and voice-acting crew.
  • The SilverHawks property had received its only prior comic-book adaptation as a 6–7 issue run under Marvel's Star Comics imprint (1987–1988), which adapted stories from the cartoon rather than producing original material.
