“The Rescue of President Carden”

In "The Rescue of President Carden," Dick Briefer crafts a swashbuckling adventure where a humble deck hand named Harry—once briefly king of the forgotten island of Weetina—teams up with his shipmate Prince to reclaim his homeland from the tyrannical King Jules. With the help of Old Pierre, the only one who knows the truth about Harry’s secret past, they confront the king in a dramatic chase that ends in a fatal fall from the palace parapet. Fred Schwab’s dynamic cover captures the moment of peril, while Briefer’s storytelling blends royal intrigue and personal redemption in this 1942 adventure from Silver Streak Comics.

Harry, a deck hand aboard Prince's ship, reveals that at age twelve he had briefly been King of Weetina. Unhappy with the responsibility, his twin brother changed places and Harry ran off to sea. They decide to visit Harry's homeland, only to find the people oppressed under the heel of King Jules. Taken on a tour of the dungeons, they discover Old Pierre, the only man in whom Harry confided the switch of brothers at age twelve. Prince and Harry surprise the king in his bedroom, but he escapes. Giving pursuit, the king shoots Prince in the shoulder, but falls off the parapet to his death.
