Sidekick #11

Tom Mandrake's cover for this 2015 Joe's Comics/Image release is a genuinely arresting image: a green-suited figure clutching a glowing skull-emblazoned shield soars high above a city skyline, his outstretched hand gripping what appears to be a disembodied red skull head trailing a sweeping crimson and shadow-dark cape. The composition uses that vertiginous rooftop perspective to give the whole scene a queasy, triumphant energy that feels distinctly unsettling. J. Michael Straczynski's "Small Beginnings Part One of Two" promises the kind of morally complicated superhero storytelling that has made Sidekick such a compelling series to follow.
