“The Secret of the Space Monster”

In "The Secret of the Space Monster," a terrifying octopoid entity menaces a starship crew—only for Space Ranger Rick Starr, alongside Myra and Cryll aboard the Solar King, to uncover the truth: the menace is a deceptive mirage conjured by rebellious blue-ostrich Korthan forces seeking to conquer their world and Earth. Written by Gardner Fox and Edmond Hamilton, with art by Bob Brown, this 1958 Showcase #16 delivers a clever blend of sci-fi suspense and classic space adventure, with Cryll’s disguises and an old iron cannon proving key to unraveling the illusion. The cover, also by Bob Brown, captures the eerie dread of the phantom monster.
