“The Hoodoo Beasts of Mozambique”

In "The Hoodoo Beasts of Mozambique," young Kalo faces a grim trial at the Kipembawe Kraal, forced to prove his manhood by slaying a savage beast—though he has no desire to do so. With his rival Darjil plotting to ensure his downfall, Kalo is sent into the wild, where fate and a fearsome lion named Simba test his courage and change the tribe’s ancient ways. Written by Ed Hunt and illustrated by Richard Case, with a cover by Maurice Whitman, this 1951 tale from Fiction House blends coming-of-age tension with the raw power of the African wild.

At the Kipembawe Kraal, Kalo has come of age, and must kill a savage beast to prove his manhood, against his wishes. His rival, Darjil, seeks to make sure Kalo fails, as the winner will some day become chief. Darjil schemes to pit Kalo against Simba, but it is Darjil who falls beneath Simba's might. Kalo decrees that the tribe shall henceforth never kill a lion.
