“Home by Christmas”

The cover by Joe Kubert says it all — a grim, heavily armed Sgt. Rock stands his ground in a snow-blanketed warzone, shoulder-to-shoulder with a cheerfully incongruous snowman while an enemy tank looms behind them and soldiers shout "Smash it down!" The juxtaposition of that frosty holiday figure against the steel and tension of combat gives the story title "Home by Christmas" a bittersweet, instantly compelling edge. Robert Kanigher and Frank Redondo bring Easy Company's world to life inside, making this 1981 issue a fine example of DC's war comics firing on all cylinders.
