Marianne contracts a dangerous fever, and Elinor and Colonel Brandon attend her. Willoughby arrives, having heard the news, and tries to convince Elinor that he is not as bad as he seems, though he knows there can never be anything between himself and Marianne. After Marianne recovers, she realizes that Colonel Brandon will make a better husband than Willoughby. The Dashwood girls return home, where they learn that Edward has married Lucy, but fortunately Edward arrives soon after to explain that it was his brother Robert who married Lucy, and he has come to propose marriage to Elinor.
