Lord Snyles persuades the king to finance an expedition to the Spanish New World to trade for gold. He agrees but insists that Jon accompany him, for protection against the pirates in those waters. The King tells Jon that in addition to whatever protection he may give, to keep an eye on his cousin Styles, who is a weak man, a gambler and a rascal. Styles orders his man Boppo to kill Jon and Justin, but they put him to rout, cutting off Boppo's pigtail. Jon hands this to Styles, as a warning not to try any further monkey business.
