“The Darkest House, Part Two of Three”

Dan LuVisi's painted cover for this June 2011 issue sets a genuinely unsettling tone: a towering, horned demon creature looms over a bound, red-haired figure kneeling on a rocky ledge — the only oddly tender detail being a small stuffed bear dangling from that figure's fingers amid hellish flames and eerie green mist. It's the second chapter of "The Darkest House," a three-part arc crafted by writer Gail Simone and artist J. Calafiore, suggesting the team has been dragged somewhere truly dire. If this cover is any indication, things are about to get considerably worse before they get better.
