It explains how natural forces like tectonic shifts and porous rock layers trapped oil and gas, and how modern humans extract this "buried sunlight" through drilling and refine it into fuels and lubricants.
"Un-Natural Science – Some Zoological Fallacies" debunks common myths about animals, revealing that elephants don’t live longer than humans and that snakes don’t actually hear music—instead, they react to movement. The story also explores how the mind enables humans to adapt to extreme environments, unlike animals whose physical and mental limitations prevent such survival.
A young man questions a nurse and doctor about blood donation and plasma processing, learning how fasting before donation reduces fat in the blood and why plasma—stripped of red and white blood cells—can be safely given to anyone, even without matching blood types. The story follows the journey of donated blood from collection to centrifugation, testing, pooling, freezing, and drying, highlighting how this process allowed plasma to be shipped worldwide and saved countless lives during wartime.
Admiral Richard E. Byrd recounts his early naval career, including a daring rescue from sharks, and his decision to resign from the Navy to lead a private expedition to Antarctica. With a team of scientists and volunteers, he establishes "Little America," a base on the ice, and later becomes the first person to fly over the South Pole.
