Writer Steve Orlando had been building toward this issue across multiple volumes of his Scarlet Witch run, even planting the groundwork in his 2024 Crypt of Shadows anthology story, which set up Agatha Harkness's return as the catalyst for Amaranth's arrival. Amaranth herself was conceived by artist Jen Bartel for Marvel's 2023 New Champions variant cover program — a line of covers celebrating the debut of Spider-Boy by imagining hypothetical 'forgotten' sidekicks for major Marvel heroes — and first appeared in that non-story context on a variant for Scarlet Witch (Vol. 3) #9, before receiving a brief unnamed cameo in Timeless (Vol. 3) #1. Orlando, who described leaping at the chance to bring her into the regular Marvel Universe, collaborated with interior artist Lorenzo Tammetta (with colors by Frank William and lettering by VC's Ariana Maher) under editor Alanna Smith to give Amaranth her first full in-continuity story; the main cover was by Russell Dauterman, who stated publicly at the time of release that it was his personal favorite cover he had ever drawn.
