Vertigo's Scalped was one of 2008's most uncompromising crime series, and issue #17 brings the "Dead Mothers" arc to a close with a cover that stops you cold. Jock's artwork sets a brooding close-up of a man's shadowed face against a slashing column of crimson, with a lone figure falling — or fallen — amid that violent red void. Jason Aaron and R. M. Guéra's reservation noir has never looked more ominous than it does here.
