Savage Dragon Legacy FCBD #1

Distributed for free on Free Comic Book Day 2015, the issue served as both an accessible entry point for new readers and a narrative milestone for longtime followers, showing Malcolm graduating high school and joining the Chicago Police Department in direct echo of his father's own origin. The issue also functions as a rare piece of published Larsen pre-production: when the story's content finally landed in the ongoing title as Savage Dragon #211, Larsen had reworked the dialogue and added pages, making the FCBD printing a documented record of his storytelling intentions before he changed his mind about the timing of the Malcolm-as-cop arc. That creative transparency — Larsen publicly explaining in the letters page of #211 why and how he revised the preview — is itself a noteworthy moment of creator-owned candor.

Written and drawn entirely by Erik Larsen, one of the seven co-founders of Image Comics in 1992 and the sole continuous creator of Savage Dragon since its launch, the issue was solicited under Diamond order code JAN150008 and distributed through participating comic shops on Free Comic Book Day, April 2015. The story was conceived as a preview of the next major chapter of the ongoing series, depicting Malcolm Dragon's entry into law enforcement — a plot beat Larsen ultimately delayed in the monthly book to address Dimension X storylines first. When the material was eventually incorporated into Savage Dragon #211, the Grand Comics Database confirmed it was reprinted with added pages and altered dialogue, making the FCBD version a distinct, earlier textual state of that story.
