Sandman #49

Part nine of "Brief Lives" arrives with a cover by Dave McKean that sets a fittingly somber tone — a shadowy, partially obscured face emerges from deep darkness, framed against rich crimson tones, with the arc of chapter titles encircling it like a ritual inscription. Written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Jill Thompson with inks by Vince Locke, this 1993 Vertigo issue closes out one of Sandman's most emotionally resonant arcs. The design work alone — moody, painterly, and hauntingly restrained — makes this a compelling artifact of the series at the height of its creative ambition.
