Poor Sad Sack is getting it from all sides on this cheerful Harvey Comics cover — a little bird pecks away at his helmet with a "TAP TAP" while the ground itself seems to be "THUMP THUMP"-ing him flat, stars flying everywhere as he stands dazed and barefoot in his rumpled uniform. George Baker's expressive cartooning captures everything endearing about this hapless soldier: that hangdog expression and knack for absorbing the world's indignities with weary good humor. For a dime in 1956, "Loved by Millions" was no exaggeration — this is Harvey Comics fun at its most warmly relatable.
