Ellen travels to Texas to marry Tom, a widower she met through a magazine's lonely hearts ad. They are happy at first, but Tom refuses to let Ellen socialize with any of their neighbors. He refuses to explain at first, then tells her that he blames the others for his first wife’s death; she was accidentally killed after arguing with Tom about her social life. When the barn catches fire, the neighbors all arrive to help Tom save his ranch, and he realizes he judged them unfairly. He promises to change his ways.
