Reggie Mantle is in full peacock mode on this January 1977 cover, showing off a football and a copy of the Riverdale Gazette ("Mantle Scores Winning T.D.") to a wide-eyed Archie and a bemused blonde, while a portrait of Reggie in his #77 football uniform hangs proudly on the wall behind him. The cover gag lands perfectly — a speech bubble from the onlookers quips that Reggie is so obnoxious even his pet rock ran away from him, a wonderfully timed jab at the mid-seventies pet rock craze.
