The series was born directly out of the 2020 Dynamite miniseries Mars Attacks Red Sonja, written by Eisner Award-winner John Layman with art by Fran Strukan — itself a project Layman publicly described as one he had to persistently lobby Dynamite to greenlight. For the 2025 sequel, Dynamite brought in Jay Stephens (known for his horror-comedy work on Dwellings and Tales from the Abyss) as writer, while retaining Strukan as artist to maintain visual continuity with the earlier series; Stephens has cited the original Norman Saunders Mars Attacks card art as a major personal touchstone. The series was solicited in Diamond's January 2025 Previews catalog and each issue was polybagged with a trading card, a deliberate homage to the format history of the Mars Attacks property itself.
