About this Issue

Red Sonja Attacks Mars #2 continues Dynamite Entertainment's second foray into the genre-colliding mashup of Robert E. Howard's Hyborian Age sword-and-sorcery and the mid-century sci-fi horror of the Mars Attacks! trading card universe, a crossover lineage that stretches back to the 2020 series Mars Attacks Red Sonja. What distinguishes this particular issue is its deployment of gender-swap storytelling—Red Sonja disguises herself as male alter ego 'Red Sohn, He-Devil with a Sword' as a plot device to complete a covert rescue mission—a playful but pointed inversion of the character's own origin in a male-dominated genre. The issue represents Dynamite's sustained creative investment in cross-property genre experimentation, blending retro science fiction, dark comedy, and sword-and-sorcery in a way that pushes Sonja into unfamiliar narrative and social territory, expanding the thematic range of her adventures beyond typical barbarian-fantasy fare.

History

Red Sonja Attacks Mars is a direct sequel to the 2020 Dynamite miniseries Mars Attacks Red Sonja, which was written by Eisner Award-winning writer John Layman with art by Fran Strukan. The 2025 follow-up brought in writer Jay Stephens—known for his horror-tinged works Dwellings and Tales from the Abyss—while retaining Strukan as artist, giving the sequel continuity of visual identity while shifting the tonal voice toward darker comedy. Stephens has cited Norman Saunders, the original Mars Attacks! trading card illustrator, as a direct inspiration for the series' aesthetic, describing his approach as 'reimagined nostalgia' and 'irreverent reverence' for mid-century pop horror. Each issue in the series was published in polybagged, cardstock-covered format with an included trading card, a deliberate homage to the collectible-card origins of the Mars Attacks! property itself.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Jay Stephens (Dwellings, Tales from the Abyss) with interior art by Fran Strukan; Strukan also illustrated the predecessor 2020 series Mars Attacks Red Sonja.
  • Published by Dynamite Entertainment; the standard cover (Cover A) is by Joseph Michael Linsner, with variant covers by Jae Lee & June Chung (Cover B) and Greg Land (Cover C), plus multiple retailer incentive tiers.
  • Issue #2 introduces 'Red Sohn, He-Devil with a Sword'—Red Sonja's male disguise—as a plot mechanism to allow her to infiltrate a slave-trading operation without being recognized.
  • On-sale date was April 16, 2025 per Dynamite's official solicitation; League of Comic Geeks logs an actual release date of May 7, 2025 (a discrepancy noted across retailer and fan sources).
  • The series is a sequel to Mars Attacks Red Sonja (2020, 5 issues), which was written by John Layman; the 2025 series inverts the original title to signal Sonja as the aggressor rather than the target.
  • Each issue in the series ships polybagged with an exclusive trading card—a structural homage to the original 1962 Topps Mars Attacks! card set from which the franchise originates.
  • Issue #2 is 32 pages, full color, rated Teen+, and was also made available day-and-date digitally via ComiXology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, and other platforms.
  • Copies of the standard cover edition were noted by at least one major retailer distributor (MyComicShop) to have a printing defect in the form of cover dents, a production anomaly documented across affected stock.
