About this Issue

Red Sonja Attacks Mars #4 is the concluding chapter of Dynamite Entertainment's second Red Sonja/Mars Attacks crossover miniseries, completing a genre experiment that deliberately fuses Robert E. Howard's Hyborian Age sword-and-sorcery with the grotesque, darkly comedic aesthetics of Topps' 1962 Mars Attacks trading card mythology. The issue introduces the composite villain MAR-SET-AHKS — a Martian invader possessed by the ancient serpent god Set and accompanied by snake-filled Martian mummies — marking the first appearance of that mashup antagonist and a genuinely novel synthesis of two otherwise incompatible fictional cosmologies. As a four-issue capper to a sequel that itself grew out of the 2020 Mars Attacks Red Sonja series, issue #4 represents the full arc of Dynamite's effort to build a sustained shared-universe mythology between the She-Devil with a Sword and the big-brained Martian invaders. Its cardstock-covered, polybagged format — designed to echo the original trading card packaging of Mars Attacks — also situates the issue within a deliberate conversation about the medium's own nostalgia and collectible history.

History

The series was written by Jay Stephens, known for his horror-comedy work on Dwellings and Tales from the Abyss, and drawn by Fran Strukan, who had also illustrated the original 2020 Mars Attacks Red Sonja miniseries written by John Layman — giving the sequel a direct visual continuity with its predecessor. Stephens was announced as writer in December 2024, with the series solicited in Diamond's January 2025 Previews catalog and the first issue shipping in March 2025; issue #4 followed in July 2025 as the series finale. In a creative choice meant to honor the property's roots, Dynamite packaged the series' first issue — and its variant covers by Joseph Michael Linsner, Jae Lee, and Greg Land — as cardstock, polybagged editions each containing an exclusive collectible trading card, deliberately mirroring the original Topps Mars Attacks card format from 1962.
