“To Avenge the Earth”

Earl Norem's painted cover for this June 1978 magazine-format Marvel title makes a bold promise right in the banner: "Earth's Mightiest Heroes in Action." The Hulk looms enormously in the center, heaving what appears to be a massive boulder, while Thor stands hammer-ready at his right and a golden robot strides forward at his left — with two smaller red-suited figures caught in the chaos between them. Inside, Doug Moench and Sal Buscema deliver the story "To Avenge the Earth," and that assembled lineup suggests the stakes are every bit as large as the cover implies.
