“The Wonder of You [Alamo Part Three]”

Glenn Fabry's cover for this May 2000 Vertigo issue is genuinely unsettling — a scarred, shaven-headed man with a milky, damaged eye dominates the frame in extreme close-up, his expression radiating cold menace. Below him, rendered in miniature as if under his absolute control, a group of white-robed, hooded figures sit gathered around a round table. Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's "Alamo Part Three" is deep in its seven-part endgame, and this cover sets a mood of dread that feels entirely earned.
