Plastic Man #20
Kyle Baker's cover for this 2006 DC series finale chapter is a pure delight — a wolfish, sneaky-looking cartoon canine crouches with a hammer amid a pile of broken bricks, squaring off against a boxy red structure whose occupants (a trio of wide-eyed little pigs) peer out nervously from windows, while a gleeful smiling sun beams overhead. It's a wonderfully absurdist riff on a very familiar fairy tale, and perfectly captures the offbeat, animation-inflected humor Baker brings to every corner of this series. "The Gritty, Realistic Conclusion!" of the Edwina Crisis promises exactly the kind of tongue-in-cheek storytelling that made this run such a distinctive entry in DC's catalog.
