When Peter Cottontail ties with a rival in the Doodleburg Book Club's reading contest, his competitor hatches a scheme to keep him distracted—hiring a mischievous cat named Katsnip to pester Peter while he tries to finish his book review. Peter endures a series of escalating interruptions, from door-to-door salesmen to unexpected packages, all while desperately seeking a quiet place to read and write.

Peter Cottontail and his uncle stumble upon a mysterious rocket ship and find themselves whisked away to an alien planet, where the locals seem thrilled to see them—until they discover what "xifio" really means. When the tables turn and Peter learns that on this strange world, vegetables eat people instead of the other way around, his uncle faints in terror, leaving Peter to figure out how to survive and get them both back home.

Peter Cottontail gets caught up in a newspaper-sponsored butterfly-catching contest, and his nephews spot what looks like an easy way to make money by selling their finds. As Peter spends the day hunting for the perfect specimen to win, he discovers that the real prize might be something nobody expected—including a rare butterfly variety that turns the whole competition on its head.

Peter Cottontail accepts a challenge from Sandy Skunk to settle who's truly the luckiest animal in town, with judges following each of them through a day of contests to determine the winner. As Peter attempts to prove his luck across a golf course, a shopping district, and a grand opening, his efforts seem consistently thwarted—but he's convinced his day will prove he deserves the crown.
