“Heart Art”

Summer camp chaos takes center stage in this 1979 installment of Archie Comics Group's long-running Pep, as the camp director announces he'll be choosing a Head Counsellor from a group of eager candidates — Archie and the gang among them — while the bottom panel reveals his hilariously unscientific method: a dart board spinning with names including Jughead, Reggie, Moose, and others. The cover's three-panel layout perfectly captures the comedic tension, from the beachside fun of the gang in their swimsuits up top to the director's straight-faced declaration and his dart-throwing decision-making process below. It's a warm, breezy slice of Riverdale humor that makes "Heart Art" look like a thoroughly entertaining read.

As the gang enjoys a day at the beach, Jughead reads a book called "Ventriloquism - The Art of Voice-Throwing" and tells Leroy it will add a little excitement to their lives. After Betty refuses to let Jughead sample her lunch basket, Jughead starts throwing his voice to convince the gang they're hearing things because they're hungry. Leroy scares Jughead by making his sandwich talk, and the gang realizes what was really going on. They reward Leroy with all the ice cream he wants. Back home, Jughead's parents are trying to figure out why he turned pale when his mom offered him a sandwich.
