Paper Girls #1
This first volume of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang's acclaimed series collects the initial story arc, following four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls in 1988 Stony Stream, Ohio, who stumble into a time-travel conflict after a mysterious encounter. The collection includes issues #1–5 of the ongoing Image Comics series, introducing the core cast and the surreal, sci-fi mystery that defines the run.
Paper Girls #1 (2016) kicks off Brian K. Vaughan’s acclaimed series with a pulse-pounding blend of mystery and time-bending adventure, as four paper route girls stumble upon a time machine that throws them into a battle far beyond their understanding. Written by Vaughan and brought to vivid life by Cliff Chiang’s striking interior art—penciled and inked by Chiang, with Matt Wilson’s evocative colors and Jared K. Fletcher’s crisp lettering—the issue establishes a haunting, otherworldly tone from the first page. The cover, also by Chiang, captures the eerie stillness before the storm, setting the stage for a story where the past, present, and future collide.
In "null," the Paper Girls race against time when Erin is shot, forcing the group to flee in a car toward the hospital. Along the way, they're ambushed by a Restorer intent on wiping their memories—only for the Teenagers Heck and Naldo to intervene and end the threat.
In "null," the Paper Girls are forced into the sewers to evade the Old-Timers, only to face a new threat when Grand Father Jahpo dispatches an editrix to track them down. With Erin injured, the girls make a desperate escape, racing through the tunnels and into their timeship to reach safety and begin her recovery.
In "null," Erin stumbles back into the basement of the house where the Paper Girls first found the time machine, having been rescued by Naldo and Heck during a harrowing descent. As the Old Timers assault the machine and the two guardians fall, the girls reunite in the crumbling aftermath—only to face new threats as Grand Father Jahpo and Restorer Cardinal close in. The house vanishes in a flash, leaving behind only a crater and the echoes of time unraveling.
