Benjamin Percy joined the Nightwing series with issue #44 and had mapped out a longer run continuing threads like the Dark Web/Wyrm antagonist, but the shooting of Dick Grayson in Tom King's Batman #55 — an event originating entirely outside the Nightwing title — forced a hard editorial pivot. Percy publicly acknowledged via social media that he did not get to complete the story he had planned for the character, and Bleeding Cool reported that his departure with issue #50 stemmed from disagreement with the editorial direction. Issue #50 was an oversized anniversary format (48 pages), and Percy used it to dual-timeline the present-day Ric Grayson situation against flashbacks to Dick's Robin days — structurally making the most of a swan song while establishing groundwork for the Scott Lobdell run that immediately followed from issue #51 onward.
