New Warriors (vol. 3) #4 marks the first appearance of Debrii (Deborah Fields), the last new character added to the reality-TV incarnation of the New Warriors — and the only team member not hand-picked by Night Thrasher, instead thrust upon the group by a TV producer hungry for on-screen friction. That narrative conceit gave Wells and Young a sharp tool for exploring how media spectacle distorts superhero team dynamics, making Debrii's debut a pointed bit of social satire dressed up as a superhero caper. Because Debrii survived the Stamford disaster that killed Namorita, Night Thrasher, and Microbe at the end of this same mini-series, her first appearance here sits at the threshold of Marvel's Civil War era: she would go on to join the Initiative, the Secret Avengers, and Counter Force, giving her a surprisingly long post-debut footprint in the 616 continuity. The issue also introduced the Mad Thinker's android simulacra of historical figures — Einstein, Freud, da Vinci, and Woolf — as the issue's surprise villains behind a fake Terrax, a characteristically irreverent Wells-and-Young touch.

The six-issue New Warriors vol. 3 mini-series was conceived by writer Zeb Wells and artist Skottie Young as a reality-TV satire, launching in June 2005 under editor MacKenzie Cadenhead and editor-in-chief Joe Quesada. Issue #4, released September 28, 2005 (cover-dated November 2005), was the point at which the creative team introduced the final cast member they needed to fully dramatize the tensions inherent in an externally produced superhero show. Young handled pencils, inks, and colors himself throughout the run, giving the book a visually unified, cartoonish energy that distinguished it from contemporaneous Marvel titles. The entire six-issue run was later collected in the trade paperback New Warriors: Reality Check (released January 2006) and subsequently reissued as Civil War Prelude: New Warriors, cementing the mini-series' place as essential prologue reading for the 2006–2007 Civil War event.
