History

The Illuminati group was first introduced via retcon in Brian Michael Bendis's New Avengers #7 (July 2005), but their full backstory demanded a dedicated stage. Bendis and co-writer Brian Reed — with pencils by Alex Maleev on the original one-shot — produced this 48-page special, published on March 29, 2006 (cover-dated May 2006), under the editorial oversight of Tom Brevoort and editor-in-chief Joe Quesada. Marvel marketed it explicitly as a 'Road to Civil War' title and as a prologue to the Planet Hulk saga simultaneously, a dual-event anchoring that reflected the tight cross-title plotting Bendis and the editorial office had developed during this period.
