“Wormwood Palace”

The finale of Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham's cosmic horror series goes out with a cover that is equal parts beautiful and deeply unsettling — a lone suited figure tumbles upside-down through star-flecked blackness toward a vast, glowing orange surface etched with an ominous occult symbol. Nathan Fairbairn's colors make that smoldering, alien terrain feel genuinely threatening, the fiery hues contrasting with the cold void above in a way that perfectly captures the series' blend of science fiction dread and esoteric menace. If "Wormwood Palace" is even half as intense as this image promises, issue #6 is a fittingly harrowing conclusion to one of Image's more ambitious 2015 offerings.
